Drywalling Over Old Ceilings: Worth It in Older NJ Homes?

A lot of older NJ homes still have textured ceilings, exposed decorative beams, or stained drop-tile grids. They all collect dust, soak up light, and visually shrink the room. Drywalling over them is one of the highest-impact renovations you can do without touching a single wall.

Before scheduling the work, two things matter: testing any pre-1980 popcorn ceiling for asbestos, and confirming the existing framing or strapping can support new drywall. Both are quick checks that prevent very expensive surprises.

From there it's straightforward — furring or strapping where needed, hang 1/2'' drywall, tape and finish to a level 4 or 5, prime, and paint. The ceiling reads brand new, the lighting works harder, and the whole room feels taller.

A standard room runs about 2–3 days. Whole-floor jobs typically wrap in 5–8 days depending on lighting changes and how much prep the existing structure needs.
