When Window Replacement Is Actually Worth It in NJ

Replacement windows get pitched as a magic energy upgrade. The reality is more nuanced. A good install pays back over time — but only if the existing windows are genuinely failing, and only if the new units are spec'd and installed properly.
Replace when: sashes are rotted, seals between panes have failed (you'll see fog between the glass), frames are out of square, or the existing units are single-pane and leaking air around every edge. Those windows are not coming back, no amount of caulk will fix them.
Don't replace when: the frames are sound and only the seals or hardware are tired. New balances, weatherstripping, and storm windows can give you another decade for a fraction of the cost.
When you do replace, the install matters more than the brand. Full-frame replacements with proper flashing and insulation outperform 'pocket' or insert replacements in older NJ homes where the existing frames may already be compromised.
A typical whole-house window replacement runs 2–4 days for a standard home. Plan a day longer if exterior trim is being wrapped or replaced at the same time.
